One of the greatest gifts of travel is experiencing the everyday lives of extraordinary people.
Just outside Geneva, in the French village of Jonzier-Épagny, our Arete Creative Scholars were welcomed into the home and dairy farm of our dear friends Isabelle and Maurice, whose family has worked the land for generations.
Maurice and his son Cyril showed us the farm, including five newborn calves, and introduced us to Nala, the collie who watches over everything. We shared homemade tartiflette, apple tart, and prune tart around the family table.
What nourished us most, though, was the warmth and generosity of our hosts. For our students, it was a lesson in another way of living—rooted in family, community, hard work, and harmony with the land.
After Europe’s great cities, this quiet day reminded us that meaning is often found in honest work, nature, and sharing life generously with others.
