Our Heads in the Fire, Our Feet in the Water
The date palm has been described as living with its head in the fire and its feet in the water—its crown reaching into the desert heat while its roots draw life from cool water below. That became our metaphor for Medina. In 112-degree heat, we discovered the cool waters of spirituality, friendship, and extraordinary hospitality. At the Prophet’s Mosque, surrounded by thousands of pilgrims from around the world, we closed our eyes during the call to prayer and silently joined them.
At Mount Uhud, we reflected on the suffering Muhammad’s early community endured and how hardship became part of its transformation. After 63 days and 12 countries, Medina offered a fitting final lesson.
We cannot always escape the heat of conflict, fear, and uncertainty. But we can deepen our roots in wisdom, courage, compassion, friendship, and dialogue, and grow through difficult times together.
